Joyce Varughese-Raju, MD is a proud member of the Hunter College High
School Class of 1998. She was a co-organizer for the 15th Reunion for her class and attending the general Reunion for her 20th Reunion year inspired her to become more active in the Alumnae/i Association.
Joyce is currently the Medical Director of Gynecologic Oncology at Capital
Health in Pennington, New Jersey, where she has developed a clinical program which exceeds national quality measures and enables women with gyn cancers to get care closer to home. She takes an active role in teaching medical students and is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Robert Wood Johnson-Rutgers Medical School and Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine.
Strongly believing in service to the community, Joyce participates in Virtual Tumor Boards with trainees and colleagues in Vietnam and Uganda through the International Gynecologic Cancer Society. She also travelled to Uganda last year as a visiting mentor through Health Volunteers Overseas to train gynecologic oncology fellows at Uganda Cancer Institute. She also serves as a third grade Sunday School teacher at Saints Basilios-Gregorios Indian Orthodox Church in North Plainfield, New Jersey. She received her undergraduate degree in Sanskrit and Indian Studies from Harvard College and an M.D. from Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
A native New Yorker, Joyce presently resides in Hillsborough, New Jersey (as a compromise to her native Philadelphian husband!) with her husband and two children. She continues to enjoy running and photography (interests which were fostered while at Hunter). She is eager to apply the skills she uses daily as a surgeon, medical director, and mom to serve the high school and its graduates during her term on the HCHSAA Board.
Joyce serves on the board’s Communications, Diversity, and Programs Committees.
