HCHSAA Diversity Roundtable Discussions

On Thursday, April 15, the HCHSAA Diversity Committee hosted its second panel discussion on the subject of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Speakers included English/Communication and Theatre faculty Dr. Rebecca Deans, Recruitment Subcommittee Chair Mari HOASHI Franklin ’84, Huston-Tillotson University Advisory Board Chair Brian Scott ’83, former Director of HCHS Admissions Kyla KUPFERSTEIN Torres ’92, and current Hunter students Aruna D. ’22Mia M. ’22, and Durga S. ’21. Diversity Committee Chair Judith Daniel ’79 moderated the discussion.

Challenges of diversity in admissions were discussed, as was the past and current climate at the high school. Data presented showed key points in the testing cycle that have led to the drop of Black and Latinx student applicants to HCHS. Students shared a case study of reforms that specialized high schools in other cities – including Boston, Chicago, and San Francisco – have enacted that resulted in greater diversity in the student body.

We again extend our thanks to Noah Kaminsky ’09 for envisioning these panel discussions, and to David Robison ’83 and Diversity Committee Chair Judith Daniel ’79 for their support in organizing these events.
